Chapter 5

A violent shake woke me, and I cracked painful eyes to see trees passing by outside the window above me. It took a few seconds to remember where I was, my head pounding and the feeling of aches and fever back. I was about to sit up when voices reached me over the sound of the engine and wind passing by.

“We have seven so far, and that’s just from our neighborhood.” The voice was Barbara’s and through my cracked lids I could see her in the passenger seat, speaking with Jocelyn who drove. “But he’s going to be working in City Hall. That might be a problem.”

“I know,” Jocelyn said, a touch of anxiety in her voice, “but there’s nothing we can do about it. He’s too qualified and smart to work for one of the little firms in town, and this puts him on the track for Judge and eventually Justice. We’re just have to hope Selina and her coven don’t steal him away.”

“From you sweetheart?” Barbara said with a grin, “Never.”

“From us,” Jocelyn said, shooting her mom a wink. “You’re sure Winnie and Suzy will be there Wednesday?”

“They will be. They all know how your test turned out, and can’t wait to see what he’s like after the lake.” Barbara said with a little laugh.

“Bet they’re all frothing at the mouth to get their hands on him. Mmph! Lazy bitches.”

“Be nice, Joyce,” Barbara offered, “Not all of them have your strength of will. To stay away so long… I don’t know how you did it.”

“I had Tom,” Jocelyn said with love in her voice, “and even then, I could feel what he would become, it sated the need a little. Got me through the hard times. Knowing what’s coming.”

“Mmmhmm,” Barbara said, and the heat in her voice set my heart pounding, the sickness surging with renewed strength, “You’re still fine with tonight? I’m sorry, darlin… I just can’t wait another night. You understand, right?”

“Oh, mom of course!” Jocelyn said, the car leaning around a corner, “I’m the one who offered of course. Although you’ve seen the way he looks at you… it was bound to happen sooner than later. So long as he really is… I mean, he is right?!?”

“Oh yes,” Barbara said, turning and glancing back at me, but her eyes didn’t fall on my face, but on my crotch with avid interest, “Henry’s test was conclusive. He might even be a full-breed, like the Director.”

“The entire town would be jealous!”

Struggled to remain conscious, but awareness faded as I caught the last words spoken.

“The Director was the last. Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched,” Barbara’s words just barely reaching my fading mind, “What you’ve done here is already special. We’re more blessed than ninety percent of the town as it is already. Did I tell you what happened last month? Jacinda Rollins and her coven put one of their Beta’s on the town council, they mean to…”

The strangest dreams plagued my sleep, shifting images of the forest and frightened prey darting before my every hunting gaze.
